Kick scooters are one of the best ways for young kids to build balance, coordination and confidence. A few simple habits make every ride safer. Here are the tips we share with every parent.
1. Helmet on, every ride
Make it a rule from the very first ride: no helmet, no scooter. Choose a helmet that sits level on the forehead, about two finger widths above the eyebrows, with the chin strap snug enough that only one finger fits underneath. See our kids helmets, including the MOUNTALK Kids & Toddler Bike Helmet.
2. Add knee and elbow protection for beginners
New riders fall most often in the first few weeks. Knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards take the sting out of learning.
3. Start on a 3-wheel scooter
Three wheels give toddlers and preschoolers a stable base while they learn to lean and steer. Two-wheel scooters are better left until your child has strong balance, usually around age 6 to 8.
4. Set the right handlebar height
The handlebar should be between your child's waist and chest. Too high makes steering hard; too low makes them lean forward and lose balance. Adjustable scooters like the MOUNTALK 3-Wheel Mini Kick Scooter let you raise the bar as they grow.
5. Practice braking first
Before they go fast, teach your child to press the rear brake with their foot and come to a full stop. Practice on a flat, quiet path until stopping is automatic.
6. Choose safe places to ride
- Flat, smooth surfaces such as park paths, playgrounds and empty driveways.
- Away from roads, driveways with traffic, steep hills and stairs.
- Avoid wet, sandy or gravel surfaces, where wheels slip easily.
7. Stay close for young riders
Kids under about 5 should always ride within arm's reach or close sight of an adult. Little riders don't yet judge speed or distance well.
8. Be seen
Light-up LED wheels, bright clothing and reflective strips help drivers and cyclists spot your child, especially at dusk. All MOUNTALK kids scooters have light-up PU wheels.
9. Wear proper shoes
Closed-toe shoes with good grip, never sandals, flip-flops or bare feet. Tuck in or double-knot laces so they can't catch in the wheels.
10. Check the scooter before riding
Make sure the handlebar lock and folding mechanism are closed and the wheels spin freely. Our kids scooter maintenance guide covers a 30-second pre-ride check.
Choose a scooter built for safety
MOUNTALK kids scooters are EN and CPC certified, with protective wheel guards and a sturdy metal and PP + fiberglass frame. For the youngest riders, the 2-in-1 Toddler Scooter with Seat lets them start seated and move to standing when ready. Browse the full kids scooter collection.
