A kids kick scooter has no motor or battery, so looking after it is simple. Ten minutes of care every few weeks keeps it rolling smoothly, quietly and safely for years, and often long enough to hand down to a younger sibling.
Before every ride: a 30-second check
- Handlebar: make sure the height clamp or lock is fully closed and the bar doesn't slip when you press down.
- Folding lock: on a foldable scooter, confirm the folding mechanism has clicked shut.
- Wheels: spin each wheel. It should turn freely without wobbling or grinding.
- Brake: press the rear brake by hand to check it touches the wheel.
Every few weeks
Clean the deck and wheels
Wipe the deck, handlebar and wheels with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid hosing the scooter down or using a pressure washer, since water can get into the bearings. Dry it afterwards with a towel.
Clear the wheels and bearings
Hair, string and grit wrap around axles more often than you'd think. Pick them out so the wheels keep spinning freely. If a wheel sounds gritty, wipe around the bearing and add a drop of light bearing lubricant. Never use thick grease, which attracts dirt.
Tighten what's loose
Check visible screws and bolts on the handlebar, steering and wheel axles, and snug them up with the right size key. Don't overtighten wheel axles: the wheel should still spin freely.
Look at the grips and deck
Torn handlebar grips can expose hard edges, and a worn deck surface gets slippery. Replace grips that are coming off.
LED light-up wheels
Many light-up PU wheels are powered by the wheel's own motion, so there are no batteries to charge or change. If the lights get dimmer, it's usually just dirt on the wheel; a quick wipe brings them back.
Storage
- Store the scooter indoors or under cover, away from rain and direct sun, which fades plastics and wears wheels faster.
- Fold it (if foldable) or stand it against a wall so the wheels aren't carrying weight in one spot for months.
- After riding in the wet, dry the scooter before putting it away.
When to replace parts
Replace wheels that are cracked, flat-spotted or chunked, and any handlebar or folding part that no longer locks securely. If you need help with a MOUNTALK scooter, email us at mountalk@outlook.com.
Growing with your child
Part of maintenance is adjustment. Every few months, recheck the handlebar height: it should sit between your child's waist and chest. Adjustable models like the MOUNTALK 3-Wheel Mini Kick Scooter and the 2-in-1 Toddler Scooter with Seat are designed to grow with your child.
